Nearing Peru

The start of the 40th edition of the Dakar, which will take place on January 6, 2018 in Lima (Peru) and conclude on January 20 in Córdoba (Argentina), begins to take form today with the opening of registration. The return of the rally to the Peruvian dunes, which were featured in the 2012 and 2013 editions, has been among the expectations most often cited by the competitors these past few years.

The return is approaching. With less than eight months to go before the start, participants are already preparing for the 2018 edition, which will see the Dakar return to Peru, five years after its last visit to the country of the Incas. Some have already won their entry through the Dakar Challenge, like Tanveer Abdul Wahid on the India Baja, and Xavier de Soultrait on the Afriquia Merzouga Rally. For the others, the next challenge consists of completing an application form to be sent to the organisers before July 15. In the motorcycle and quad categories, the competition department will decide based on experience, while leaving room for newcomers capable of discovering the event.

The dunes in the Ica Desert will take shape in an even more precise manner over the summer for the competitors who will receive their reply, while the list of entries will still be open for the cars and trucks as well as for the new Side by Side category until November 1st. The introduction of these light-weight vehicles, intended to welcome crews coming from even more diverse horizons, is set to continue next January and enters a three-year calendar of regulation modifications.

Sam Sunderland: “Straight into the heart of a proper Dakar”

“I am really looking forward to Peru, because I have never been there before: my 2012 Dakar was over too early and in 2013 injury kept from me participating! On the other hand, I have seen a lot of footage, and I know that we will ride in some fantastic dunes. Personally, I love riding in the dunes; it is something that I am very comfortable with. And in addition to my personal goals, it is very good news for the Dakar. By beginning with the superb dune stages, we will head straight into a proper Dakar. This is going to be the 40th edition, and I will start with the number 1 plate on my bike, which is an honour.”

Enough to transform the dream into reality...
